Dr. Bryan Porter has been a faculty member in psychology with Old Dominion University since 1996. He is actively engaged in injury control and public health psychology research. His approach follows principles of behavioral community psychology to identify problem behaviors affecting communities, develop and evaluate interventions to address those problems, and work with partners in government and other fields to disseminate sustainable programs to
maintain behavior change gains.
Most of Dr. Porter's work is in traffic psychology. His research has been used to understand and change red light running, tailgating, unsafe walking, and not wearing safety belts. He has also studied environmental behaviors and fire safety. Recently he has become interested in differences between rural and urban communities' adoptions of safe driving behaviors.
